Quick info before the tips: Many of us make the mistake by thinking we're doing earth a nice gesture by recycling our trash when in fact recycling requires very large amounts of energy and large quantities of water and it is not always doable for every material. In fact, did you know that when you have a jar that is not rinsed off and is not all clean, it is not possible for it to be recycled?
I have 8 super doable tips you can apply to your everyday life and know it would make a majestic difference straight away.
let's get into the easy-peasy environment-friendly tips
Invest in a thermos and/or reusable (glass) water bottles. In the beginning of this year, I promised myself I'd get a cheap thermos and a water bottle so that for the entire year I wouldn't have to go buy a plastic water bottle like hundreds of millions out there and with my thermos I'd keep my coffee warm and fresh. And I did do that. Considering I would buy one plastic bottle everyday, I did zero so far, and 5 months in, we are 150 bottles short, which is a great success for me even though not so much for the world.
Order your coffee in a mug. When you sit down at your local coffeeshop (we all know it's Starbucks I only said local to sound fancy) you might want to order your coffee either in your empty thermos or kindly ask for a mug instead of a non-reusable coffee cup. The baristas wouldn't mind at all, that I can assure you.
Use a timer when you shower. If you are looking for a way to save money annnd the environment, here is a very good one for you my friend. When we're in the shower, we tend to zone out and contemplate over yesterday's worries and sometimes instead we sing like it's nobody's business. Buuut. We all are very much aware of the waste of water, I suppose. So next time you're in the shower, put a timer (personally I put mine at 6 minutes, which is the perfect timing for me) so instead of spending half an hour until your skin get all wrinkly, do something nice today and be proud.
Boiled egg/ noodle water to make coffee or water plants I saw this tip from one of Kristen Bell's instagram stories. She said she boiled eggs in the morning, and made a coffee with the residue water. She actually made the mistake by putting vinegar in the water, however she said she'd still drink it. We appreciate the hell out of that Kristen! But seriously. You can use the remaining water to make yourself a cup of coffee or water your plants.
Plastic straws is a big no I have unfortunately exposed all my friends to the video where the sea turtle got a plastic straw stuck in its nostril. It is a horrible, terrible, awful video for sure. But it made me realize something. That I am not a kid, and not in need of a straw, especially a plastic one for no reason. Ergo, it made me a very conscious user and I hope you can somehow stop getting straws whenever you drink something. (extra tip: ask your waitress to NOT bring straws with your drink)
Plastic bags are not for free anymore, thank god. Whether you are a girl or a boy, whether you use a purse/bag or not, you can always fit a small cloth bag in your jacket. If you're going to shopping somewhere, buy couple of those cloth bags in advance, so that you can use them hundreds of times. I can't stress the importance of not buying plastic bags anymore. They are not even practical man, they break after one single use anyway. So just be a decent hooman.
Use a washing bowl. Do not let your water open while you're doing the dishes, next time make a water bowl and clean your stuff in it. You can always clean it up and get more water, but this way is so much better in terms of sustainability.
Purchase a plant at home. Whether you already have one or not, I'd recommend get one more. Plants increase humidity, clean the air and improve your health in more ways we could imagine. One important factor is that please do not forget to water it. This way, they not only improve your environment but also help you gain more responsibility.
